Weekly Update & Student Schedules

Click on the link for the appropriate grade to print the schedule for the week which they need to place in their notebook. If you are unable to print them, your student is required to hand write their assignments in the planner by Monday morning. If you need a schedule other than the current week, please contact Lynda Laubscher, Administrative Assistant. Please make sure you and your student read through the Weekly Update so you know what the upcoming week looks like.

To report your student as ABSENT or TARDY, you must email attendance@lomsaa.com and report when and why they will be absent.

Lunch Duty Instructions

1. Please have the children stay in the green areas on the map attached. The rectangle is the covered area at the base of the steps. The triangle is the grassy area. The oval area is where the kids play/watch football.

2. Please make sure the football area has cones blocking the area from cars. There are two sets closing off both the front and back. The kids will set these up, but it is good to double check that it was done.

3. The red x's are the areas that the children should not be in. Please have them stay in the lower area of the church and not up near the classrooms or in the upper parking lots.

4. Please make sure a student has taken down the trash can and placed it at the base of the steps.

5. If you see a child making an unwise decision, please step in to gently redirect.

6. When lunch is over, please have the kids throw away their trash.

7. Please arrive at 12:30. Sometimes the children get out of class a little late, so you may have to wait a bit for lunch to start. Mrs. Gourley will come down and tell the when children lunch is over. If she has not come down by 1:15, please tell the children to throw away their trash and go upstairs.

Teacher Class Protocols

CLASS PROTOCOL FOR MRS. OHL (Language Arts and 8th Grade History)

English Grammar

Students have a vocabulary list they should be continually studying. There will be a test given every 3 weeks. They should know the meaning of the word and be able to use it correctly in a sentence. They should know 2-3 synonyms for the word and aim at knowing the part of speech used in the sentence they create. Knowing the part of speech is currently extra credit

Example:

reigned:

He reigned over his kingdom for 40 years.

ruled, governed; verb

They can create flashcards during homework club or at home to help with review. Quizlet is another great way to practice. I will share a link to a classroom quizlet for the vocabulary words.

The students should be continually studying the 8 parts of speech, definitions, and questions for the upcoming test on October 17th.

Writing:

The writing assignments are developing nicely. I've noticed quite a few students are forgetting to double space and include a header at the top.

The upper left should include:

Name: Last, First

Mrs. Ohl

English Grammar

Date

The title should be centered and the top right header should contain last name and page number.

There is an MLA format sample in the google classroom.

If a writing assignment final draft is due, please review the checklist with your student and verify all elements are included. Help the student by being their editor; every good writer has an editor.

US History 8th Grade

Students are reading through the history book in class and learning how to take notes. They will be working on creating a timeline in class. If you have time to review history with them, it would be a good idea to review and discuss their notes with them. The goal is that they understand the "big picture" and can explain smaller events that led up to major events. Having discussions is a great way to understand what they are learning and discuss current issues for a deeper understanding and connection.

CLASS PROTOCOL FOR MRS. RUSSELL: (Math and Science)

Math Class Protocol:

· NOTES: Students take notes in class in their spiral math notebooks

· HW PACKET: Math homework (listed in the weekly schedule) is to be completed in their Math HW packets (Blue-Algebra, Red- Pre-Algebra, Purple- Math-6)

· MONTHLY MATH PROJECT: to be completed by the last date of the month. You can find these projects posted in Google Classroom

· Chapter HW Assignment List is posted in Google Classroom

Science Class Protocol:

· HW JOURNAL: Students complete HW in these white packets. The weekly schedule has the HW Journal page numbers listed that students are to complete each night

· LAB BOOKS: Students take class notes and complete mini labs and chapter labs in these black composition notebooks

For both classes: Grades will be inputted into Thinkwave each time a Chapter Test has been completed (Usually every 2 weeks or so).

If you are wondering if your student is completing all of their work, please do the following:

1. Look at the Weekly Schedule and the current day's assignment

2. Ask your student to SHOW you their Math HW Packet and/or their Science HW Journal

3. Look at the Weekly schedule and what was assigned for that day.

4. ALL pages in the packet/journal prior to that day's assignment must be completed (We do not skip any pages or math lessons)

If there are blank pages in their science journals or blank pages in their math packets, those assignments are missing and need to be completed.

Students turn in their chapter Math Packets and science HW Journals on the day of the Chapter Test. They keep these with them throughout the chapter to study from. I grade the chapter test along with the HW at the same time and input their grades into Thinkwave at the same time.

Please feel free to email me with any questions or concerns.

PROTOCOL FOR MRS. CAMERON (6/7th Grade HISTORY):

NOTES: For each chapter section, students will take outline notes in class with Mrs. Cameron. She writes them on the board and they copy them down in their history spiral notebook. Notes on loose paper will not be accepted. If students are absent, they can ask her for a copy. One section, on average, will be covered per week.

TEXTBOOK: Students need to bring their history book and spiral notebook on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays only.

STUDY GUIDE: For each section they will get a study guide. Students are to finish the study guide at home if they don't complete it in class.

VOCABULARY WORDS: On the front page of the study guide, there is a list of Key Terms and People.   They must copy those down on flash cards so they can study them! The term goes on the blank side (no lines) and the definition goes on the other side, with lines. They need to label each flash card with a section number. Each stack needs have the student's name and either stapled or have a rubber band around it.

TESTS:  Test will be at the end of the CHAPTER, which is usually 3 -5 weeks, depending on the number of sections in each chapter.  ONLY on the day of the test, students will be asked to turn in the notes, study guides and/or vocabulary cards for homework points. Mrs. Cameron has the discretion to ask for some or all of the items so come prepared.

They must turn those items in on test day in order to receive full credit for homework points! Otherwise, it will be half credit. If students are absent on the test day, it is the responsibility of the students to remember to turn it in on the day they return to school for full credit. Otherwise, it will be half credit.

Check Grades

Late Work Policy

IN ORDER TO AVOID LATE WORK:

  • Parents must be familiar with Thinkwave. You will be provided a log in and password – please do not change it because the students will access Thinkwave at school using the same information.
  • Parents and students should check Thinkwave every Sunday for grades and missing work.
  • LATE WORK POLICY: Students are learning responsibility. One area of great importance in this endeavor is turning in work on time. Students need to understand the importance of timeliness in all they do. This requires organization and preparation. Late work is any assignment that is not turned in when the teacher gives a due date.  Students have until the 1st Monday of the NEXT month to turn in all late work for the previous month for 50% credit. After this NO work will be accepted for that month.
  • MAKE UP WORK/TEST: Students with absences will be allowed one week to complete missing work. A student absent only on the day of a test or the day prior to a test may be required to take the test immediately upon his/her return. The goal is to help students learn that they are responsible to determine what work or tests were missed and to initiate arrangements with the teacher. A lower grade or zero may be given for work not turned in on time.
  • Late work for any class may not be accepted after final semester grades are posted. Incomplete grades may only be assigned with the permission of the administrator in extenuating circumstances.
